This “smart” feature, along with mains power, is a sign of active equipment. For example, the following types of devices are included in the composition of active equipment:

network adapter - a card that plugs into a computer and connects it to a LAN

A repeater is a device with two ports, as a rule, designed to repeat a signal in order to increase the length of the network segment.

media converter - a device, usually with two ports, commonly used to convert media (coaxial twisted pair, twisted pair fiber)

A network transceiver is a device with two ports, usually used to convert a data interface (RS232-V35, AUI-UTP).
